the lost episodes?

jeffersons.jpeg

so i got to sleep in a little this morning and found out that "the jeffersons" comes on after "a different world" on upn in the mornings.

anyway, jade spent the night and the song came on and we were like, "oh hell yeah," as soon as that well, we're movin on up started playing.

the episode starts with florence in a good ass mood, and george and weezie are all confused and don't know why she's being so chipper. then florence starts acting random: she gives weezie like her 3rd place backstroke ribbon from some swim meet from like 30 years ago and she tries to call her uncle in detroit that she hasn't talked to in 20 years.

then florence leaves to go to the empire state building. helen and willis come over and they basically deduce that florence is going to commit suicide. the episode is a social commentary about black women and suicide -- to which, of course, george's response is that it's all b.s. because black people don't kill themselves.

and then somehow lionel tricked florence into coming back to the dee-lux apartment in the sky-hi-hi and they basically ask her straight up if she's going to kill herself and she was like, yeah.

she started talking about how she was ready to go to glory because she was depressed or whatever and she didn't have any friends and she just cleaned up after the jeffersons and finally george tells her he loves her and they talk her out of killing herself. then they invite her to dinner.

i swear, i have *never* seen any jeffersons like this. i mean, are there other "serious" episodes floating around? jade and i just sat there after it was over like, what in the hell was THAT all about?

and okay, what is the line that goes, "took a whole lotta _______ just to get up that hill?" jade says it's "trying" stretched out to like three syllables.

oh, and congratulations, jason :)

Comments

All of those Norman Lear shows had "Very special episodes"....hell Jefferson's was a spin off of the biggest social commentary show there is, All In The Family....Good Times is also in that family tree don't forget....and that show is the BEST example of when cooning meets social commentary....

at any rate....on the "very special" note....my favorite very special episode was one of Diff'rent Strokes when the Bicycle shop owner tried to molest Dudley and Arnold....it shouldn't have been funny....but man oh man!

Nice entry. I think the writer's killed florence off b/c the actress playing her wanted off of the show.

HA HA HA HA! Aight Jeffersons for trying to be all socially and politically correct. I missed that one too, but I have never really been a big fan of the show. I liked it, but never got caught up in watching it ... but the trying is right!

Anyway, I wonder if there is anyway we could do some sort of research to see what we come up on about old shows like the Jeffersons, 227 and whatever else is out there that dealt with issues we hardly ever talked about and displelling old myths and rumors. I know Good Times did a good job of it, I saw the episodes the other day on TV One about Penny and her mother abusing her ... so very touching! I wonder if any of our tv commentating mentors and colleagues would know. Would be interesting to see how different it is today and how lacking it is today!

You've got to be kidding me??? I've never seen anything like that. The only remotely serious Jeffersons episode I remember is George going to what he thought was a neighborhood watch meeting only to find out it was a Klan rally.

Reminds me of that very special episode of Different Strokes where Willis learned about the dangers of prostitution.
